Obituary of Elizabeth Gibson

GIBSON, Elizabeth H. 'Liz' of Lion's Head passed away peacefully at Lion's Head Hospital on October 6, 2015 -- 1 week and 1 day before her 79th birthday. Liz was educated in Scotland as an Occupational Therapist. She served in Stratheden Hospital, Scotland until 1958 when she emigrated to Saskatchewan to continue her work in hospitals treating the mentally ill. She married another specialist in mental health, Frank Gibson of Yetholm, Scotland on February 14, 1959 and 10 years later moved from Saskatchewan to Manitoba to continue working as the Department Head at a mental hospital. Liz retired in 1992 and the following year they built a home on Georgian Bay in Lion's Head. Some said it was because it was so like Scotland. Sadly, 10 years later Frank passed away and subsequently Liz moved to downtown Lion's Head. Her primary professional interest was always the severely mentally ill and her passions remained helping people and her community, gardening, painting, good music and her dogs Fine and Dandy and later Hannah. Liz was a long time member and Past President of the Lion's Head Hospital Auxiliary; President for many years of the Lion's Head Horticultural Society; and took a very active part in Flower Fantasy with her late friend Elaine Hunter. She was also active in the Lion's Head Art Committee, was a worker and artist in the Annual Art Show and served on the Board of Directors of the Bruce Peninsula Health Services. Her friends Donna Grenke, Hiltrud Copf and Louise Julian attempted to make Liz's last weeks comfortable and peaceful and lovingly watched over her. This was accomplised with the kind and ready support of friends, the Bruce Peninsula Hospital, Dr. Dave Thomson and the wonderful, caring staff of the Lion's Head Hospital along with her only relatives her niece Joan Tait of Scotland and nephew Jim Anderson of England. Even after her death Liz continued to serve others. In accordance with her wishes, her body was donated to science. A funeral tribute service to honour Liz's life will be held on Saturday, October 31st at 2:00 p.m. at the Lion's Head United Church. Rev. Allan Barr and Rev. Heather Davies officiating. Arrangements entrusted to the GEORGE FUNERAL HOME, LION'S HEAD CHAPEL, Lion's Head. Expressions of remembrance to the Bruce Peninsula Hospice would be appreciated. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family through www.georgefuneralhome.com
