Obituary of Barbara Mary Sutcliffe

SUTCLIFFE, Barbara Mary (King), in her 89th year, passed away on September 19, 2017, surrounded by friends, family, and caring staff at Golden Dawn Senior Citizen Home in Lion’s Head, ON, after a long and full life.  Barbara was born in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England, on December 22, 1928. She graduated high school just as WWII was ending, never having known a world without war or its effects. Though she was a promising classical pianist, she took a job as government clerk and trained to become a silversmith at night school. Soon she married an ambitious, young engineer, Harry Sutcliffe, and before long, she had three small children underfoot. In 1963, the family emigrated to Canada.  Barbara loved many things including travel, piano, gardening, serious literature, the Anglican church, hiking, rug hooking, quilting, cats (especially Persians), wildflowers in jam jars, family, her wonderful, eclectic collection of friends, and well-behaved grand-dogs. She also loved a good cup of tea.  She is survived and remembered with love by her children Richard (Natalia Rundkvist), Howard (Brigitte Shim), and Rosalind (Chris Mechefske); seven grandchildren, Elena, Laura, Ian, Elly, Sam, Simon, and Christine; and niece Jacqueline King. She is predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Violet King; her husband, Harry Moss Sutcliffe; and her brother, John King.  A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Christ Church Anglican, Lion's Head with reception to follow.  Interment Eastnor Cemetery.  Arrangements entrusted to the GEORGE FUNERAL HOME, LION’S HEAD CHAPEL, Lion’s Head.  Memorial donations in memory of Barbara may be made to Parkinson Canada.  Expressions of remembrance may be sent to the family through www.georgefuneralhome.com
