Obituary of Frederick Barnard

 BARNARD, Frederickof Miller Lake passed away peacefully with his wife by his side on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 in his 91st year.  Professor Frederick Mechner Barnard was born in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia on January 25th 1921.  He immigrated to England in 1938 from Czechoslovakia.  Professor Barnard completed his matriculation, met his late wife, Rachel (nee Zeisler), joined the British Army and subsequently went to Oxford and qualified for a position as Economics Master at Wyggeston Grammar School in Leicester.  He completed a PhD during his full time teaching career at the Grammar School and after a position at the University of Salford immigrated to Canada in 1964 with his wife Margot and daughter Yvonne.  In Canada, Professor Barnard taught in the Political Science Departments at the University of Saskatchewan (Regina and Saskatoon), and in 1970 joined the Department of Political Science at the University of Western Ontario.  Professor Barnard was an authority on social and political thought since the enlightenment, and published prolifically.  He also received numerous awards including the 2002 International Herder Prize for the Advancement of Herder Studies. Professor Barnard was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Gisela Mechner, sister Helga and by his beloved wife, Rachel. He is lovingly and joyfully remembered by his devoted wife Margot (nee Mann), his daughter Yvonne Patch (nee Barnard), former son-in-laws David Kotin (Colleen Darragh), and Ransom Patch, his grandsons Joshua Kotin (Rachel Applebaum) and Nicholas Patch (Jana Purmalis), and his great grand-daughter Eleonora “Nora” Kotin, who in time will know her great Opa through the photographs and stories that we shall all forever cherish.
