VAUGHAN, JackAn era has ended with the passing of the last of the Great Lakes lighthouse keepers. Jack Clasner Jewel Vaughan passed away in Lion's Head on November 9, 2008. Cherished husband of Marjory Matilda (Tillie). Much loved dad of Sherry Donley of Barrie, Lynn Vaughan-Barnes (Kenrick) of St. Catherines, John Vaughan (Debra) of London, Dorothy Gilchrist (Larry) of Owen Sound and Louis of London. Very special dad to Daphne Richardson (Brent) of Lion's Head, Jim Hopkins (Diane) of Gorrie and Michael Hopkins (Annette) of Tofield, Alberta.Wonderful grandpa to Annette Schope (Mark) of Owen Sound, Sean (Charlotte) Donley of Barrie, Becky Thorn (Fred) of Wiarton, Bill Vaughan of Windsor, Christina Elsdon of Windsor, Richard Gilchrist (Lisa) of Keady, John Allan Donley of Barrie, Aimee Gilchrist of Owen Sound, Lisa Donley of Barrie, Wayne House (Amy) of London, Andy Woods and Angela Woods of London, Arras Hopkins (Kate) of Ottawa, Emily Hopkins of Tofield, Alberta, Gelen Hopkins of Kingston, Isobel Hopkins of Tofield, Alberta Samantha Landry of London and Sean, Heather, and David Medly of Windsor.Sadly missed by Great Grandchildren Jordan Thorn of Wiarton, Autumn Donley of Barrie, Adam Elsdon of Windsor, Nicholas Thorn of Wiarton, Shayna and Jacob Gilchrist of Keady, Jordan Davy of Windsor, Cameron Hopkins and expected baby Hopkins of Ottawa.Survived by brothers Gary, Les, George, and sister Helen. Predeceased by special grandson Andrew Richardson and brothers Philip, Harry, Ronald and parents Minnie (Ecker) and Philip Vaughan.Jack loved the water and spent most of his life on the water. In his younger life he fished on the Great Lakes. After retiring from fishing, he mended fishnets for the local fisherman in Tobermory. He was so proud of his life as a lightkeeper. Jack kept light at Flowerpot Island, Cove Island, Great Duck (of the Manitoulin Island) Hope Island (bottom of Georgian Bay) and Lonely Island (northern Georgian Bay.) Jack was featured in many books, films, documentaries and television specials, because of his distinguished career with the Canadian Coast Guard.After retiring from light keeping, Jack and Tillie travelled extensively and retired in Lion's Head. In their retirement they enjoyed attending social functions at the Friendship Club in Lions' Head and at the Old School House Seniors at Stokes Bay. Jack will be greatly missed by all the friends they socialized with.Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the St. Edmund's Anglican Church, Tobermory on Saturday, November 29th at 11:00 a.m. with lunch to follow at the Community Center. Arrangements entrusted to the GEORGE FUNERAL HOME, Wiarton. Donations to the Anglican Church in Tobermory, the Lions' Head Hospital or charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family as expressions of sympathy.
