As long time cottage owners in Cape Chin, we met Doug many years ago. Doug always seems to have a smile and was always willing to chat, chat about anything it seemed. I called on his help several times over the years to come help plow the snow filled road into Cape Chin and Doug was always there. Today I Iearned of his passing and at such a young age. Our condolence to his immediate family and friends. It will not be the same driving by his homestead and knowing he will not be around to greet you. May god bless him.

Our sympathies to the family. Doug grazed his cattle on the property across the street and we too had many great chats on the side of the road. Sometimes, after rounding up a few cattle that decided to go exploring. Doug was very proud of his children and grandchildren and enjoyed having them along in the truck to check the herd. We will miss his friendly wave and smile. We are sorry we were not able to attend the services and express our condolences to the family.

We will miss seeing Doug when we drive down the East road. If the cattle were moving Doug would be close by with his big blue tractor and an ever bigger bale of hay on the loader. We often stopped for a quick chat and an update on local and worldly news and reminded him to wear a cap but to no avail. Doug was always ready for a shot of rum at the sugar shack in the spring and for a coffee and perhaps a freshly baked muffin at our cottage when he took a break from blowing snow. There will no doubt be a big void on the East road and we will greatly miss him. BARRY & NORMA, North Cape Chin

Doug was a wonderful friend to my brother Christopher Golding and his family. Bruce and I got to know Doug when we used to go up and stay at Chris` log house after Chris died. We always loved visiting with him and have stayed in touch through the years through facebook. We even had a lovely visit from him when we lived in Strathroy. We are very sad to hear of his sudden death. We know he cherished his family. One could sense his pride when he spoke of his children. One great memory we have when we were up at the log house was attending a service at St. Margaret`s chapel on a Sunday evening where we met his Mother- a truly lovely experience. Rest in peace Dear Doug. Love Bruce and Diana Faulds

To the family of Doug Hayes, I was very saddened to read of Doug's passing… he was exactly as you described, a hard working and caring farmer. He and I shared some really tough cases on farm including everything from midnight c-sections to wild cows with mastitis. The point was that Doug always called, with the animal's welfare in mind, and he was willing to give the animal a chance to make it even if the odds were low. I always respected Doug for that. It made the drive up the peninsula easier when you knew that your client was going to be kind and hopeful. He will be missed. My thoughts are with your family, he is gone too soon!

Hello Hayes Family - I was so saddened to hear that Doug had passed. I have some lovely memories of Doug from high school. Nothing specific comes to mind but he was always pleasant and well liked and that speaks volumes about him as a person. When we were not at school we saw each other at Young Peoples outings sponsored by the church. When I think of him it is always a bright sunny day. I have not seen Doug for years but was glad to hear that he had a family including children and grandchildren. My thoughts are with you at this time while you struggle to move forward without him.

Our deepest sympathies to both family and friends of Doug"s.
Doug was a wonderful neighbour to us for five years in Cape Chin. He would wave and stop to chat. Always with a smile. And to be fair, my kids waved every single time he drove his tractor by - several times a day - every day. Farmer Doug would always wave and smile. We knew that Doug would be there for us if we ever needed a hand. He was a kind soul.
It was a pleasure knowing Doug and the Cape Chin community will dearly miss him.

I'm at a loss of words over Doug's sudden passing.
He was a wonderful cousin to me when we were young and so glad that we kept in touch these past few years including a couple of visits to Ottawa........and we know how hard it was to get him to leave the farm so I treasure those visits.
On Friday I will make a brown sugar sandwich for lunch and remember our times together late at night in the kitchen of the farm house.....RIP Doug !
Sadly we will not be able to make it to the service but our thoughts are with you all.
Love Helen, Phil, Jami, Randy and Amber
