Obituary of Joyce Whicher

WHICHER, Joyce (nee Houston) 1920 - 2019

Joyce died peacefully, with family close by, at Gateway Haven, on March 9, 2019. Dear mother of Sandi Whicher of Colpoys Bay; Cecelia Seidler and husband Wolf of North Bay; Carl Whicher and wife Beverley of Kitimat, B.C. and Ken Whicher and wife Onolee of Colpoys Bay. Adored grandmother of Christine (Steve), Karl (Becki), Jen (Barry), Kevin (Mariola), Susan, Allison, Catherine, Evelyn, Phil (Sheena) and Elizabeth (Steve). Cherished great grandmother of Nate, Sam, Caitlyn, Natalie, Tamsin, Kyra, Avery, Alliya, Francesca, Gabrielle and Lyla. Much loved sister of Alex Houston and sister-in-law of Jean Whicher, Pat Morrow, Mary Whicher, Phoebe Hall and Jim Whicher (Patti). Caring aunt of many and friend of all who knew her. Predeceased by her parents Kenneth Houston and Ethel Field Houston, and her beloved husband Harry Whicher (2005).

Joyce was a very special lady. She and Harry were married for 62 years. She taught English to students wherever Harry’s job took them (Arvida, Guyana, Montreal, Los Angeles, Pakistan) and Wiarton when retirement brought them back to the Colpoys Bay homestead where Harry was born. She was the Commissioner of Girl Guides in Guyana when Lady Baden Powell made a visit. She rode horses until age 92. She wrote many travel articles and even more letters and poems. She danced and played the piano. She played bridge and euchre; she sewed and embroidered, and she read extensively. Most of all she loved her family. She was never heard to say an unkind word about anyone. She will be greatly missed.

A celebration of Joyce’s life will take place at the GEORGE FUNERAL HOME, 430 Mary Street, Wiarton, on July 20, 2019 from 1:30 – 3:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wiarton and District Family Literacy Association where Joyce was a long-time volunteer or to the charity of your choice.
