Dear Daphne,
We were talking to Bob Vander Slagt a couple of weeks back and again today (July 24) and we were discussing the news of Roger's passing and how quickly you had to say good by for now. When Gaye and I were discussing all this, we both recalled that one of our favourite memories for us was the night the four of us went to see "The Sound of Music" at the Eglington theatre in Toronto. It was, at the time, a huge box office attraction and had been playing for over a year before we got to see it. We also recalled spending a night at Roger's parents' place but we can't recall what we were doing there. Memories...what decides what we recall and what we forget?
Our memories of you and Roger are all good and sweet.
Regards
Richard and Gaye Henry

We were so sad to hear of Roger's passing and our hearts are filled with sorrow for the loss Daphne and the family are enduring. For over 50 years, he was a great friend of Robert's as they got to know each other well at Emmanuel Bible College - a friendship that continued over many years and in spite of distance. We treasure a recent visit with Roger and Daphne during which the passing years seemed to disappear and old memories brought us right back to our early years together. Roger, you will be sorely missed.

I too just learned of Roger's passing through reading the Rockway Reflections newsletter. My sincerest sympathies to Daphne, Jeff, Bryan, and their families. I am so thankful to have had the tremendous blessing of knowing Roger throughout my highschool years. His sincere faith, godly character, and faithful dedication to excellence in teaching and coaching had a deep and lasting impact on my life, and on the lives of all who knew him. I pray that the Lord will strengthen you during this time of grieving and separation. May you find comfort in knowing that Roger was indeed loved by many and that he is now at home with the Lord. "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you" 1 Peter 1:3,4.

I just read of Roger's passing in the Rockway Reflections, and I groaned in anguish when I saw it. My sincere condolences to Daphne and the entire Stover family. Roger was without a doubt the most important influence on me during my highschool years. And I know that I am not alone in saying this. He was truly special. He loved teaching and coaching, and also loved his students. He knew how to inspire and challenge, and confront when necessary. I am so grateful to have experienced his care and influence in my life. I imagine that when he entered heaven he was ushered in with this sentiment: "Well done, good and faithful servant...." Well done indeed. You will be sorely missed.

I was so sad to hear of Roger's passing. Roger had a huge impact on me as a teacher and a coach throughout my years at Rockway. I have no idea how he did it, but somehow we always wanted to run lines for Rog. I remember a year when our basketball team unexpectedly won CWOSSA and how after the cheering and hugs died down we turned to Rog and said, "Where's OFSAA?". I can still remember the look on his face as he stood there stunned, started to laugh, put his hand to his head and said, "You know, I don't actually know." (We didn't let him live that one down for the rest of the season!)
Rog had an incredible ability to inspire excellence in his students and athletes without a harsh tone or words. I am a teacher now, and Rog remains an example of how to support students with fierce integrity, unwavering commitment, a gentle presence and a great sense of humour. He has had a huge impact on so many people and will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers go to all of his family.

Dear Daphne, and Stover family,
We send our condolences and share your grief in Roger's passing, and celebrate his new life with Jesus. In my years as a student at Rockway, Roger's teaching, coaching, mentoring, and spiritual leadership formed my life, and I would not be the same person if not for his influence in my life. He taught and showed a Godly man's character, and knew how to bring out the best in people, whether it was through athletics, friendship, encouraging, or other means. He was very humble, yet knew how to spur people on. Working with teenagers is a most difficult profession, but he instilled admiration and respect from every student in the school, totaling hundreds of students over his 30 years of teaching.
I have so many memories of Roger's impact on my life: he turned me into a national-caliber runner and I reached the all Ontario Finals in grade 9 after not making it to the county track meet in Grade 8. Girls were taught phys ed by Roger, which gave us a great physical education. He taught basketball skills beyond what other teachers were capable of, and our teams were always successful.
He mentored us spiritually, since we would spend a lot of time driving to and from our sporting events, giving time for deep meaningful discussions. He took the teams up to his family cottage for canoe tripping weekends in summer.
Later, he was the MC at our wedding, and we kept in touch with Roger and Daphne with occasional visits.
Roger and Daphne, you and your family hold a special place in our hearts and we will miss you greatly. Thank you for all you did to improve the lives of so many people.
Blessings and prayers to all of your family,
Betty Ann (Vanderkruk) and Peter Schnurr and family

Over the many years we have known Roger and Daphne, we cherished the many visits we had with them, and especially the times spent enjoying the Lord together, in song and in the Word. I well up with affection thinking of Roger and all he meant to me and my peers as students at Rockway.
I remember the first time I met Roger: I was shooting baskets in the newly constructed gym, late in the spring of my grade 9 year (1968 or so)... and Lew Weber, then Principal, brought Roger in to look around. As they were looking on, Roger had seen something he could correct in my shooting so, on the spot, he immediately - and graciously - corrected my jump shot.
We'd had only a basketball team for one year at that point, and most of the team were Gr. 12'ers and would be 'graduating and gone' that coming summer. Rockway, though rich in music and artistic talent, clearly needed help on the sports side, especially team sports. It was ground zero. I wouldn't say sports talent was non-existent at the time, but it was raw and undeveloped.
Lew was obviously very enthused about Roger as a possible new recruit to the Rockway staff (I'm not sure whether he had as yet clinched the deal with Roger). As it turned out, Lew's instincts were absolutely right: Roger had a way with molding even very raw talent into something of substance - as later became evident (though not yet in my time) when Rockway became a powerhouse on the basketball circuits.
As we all know, Roger had a way about him that was so genial, generous and magnanimous that one wanted to be better than one was.
Those few years of basketball and track and field under Roger, though brief and some time ago now, remain fresh in my memory. I count myself lucky to have benefited from Coach Stover at the start of his career! Thank you, Roger.
My heart-felt condolences to all family and friends.

I will always appreciate Roger for his gracious persistence in inviting me to try out for Rockway high school's basketball team (1971). As the shortest guy on the team, he saw potential in me that I didn't see in myself. As such, he extended to me a measure of God's grace that was so formative in helping me grow in self-confidence and in faith. While not the strongest team in the league that year, Roger valued each of his players, and win or lose, we all had something to contribute. Thank you Roger for life lessons learned under our leadership. (I Cor 15:58 ... confident that nothing you do for the Lord is a waste of time or effort.)

Moving to the peninsula was a giant leap of faith for us. We didn't know anyone and had barely ever heard of Lion's Head. But within weeks we met a most welcoming couple, Roger & Daphne Stover. We connected immediately and had so much fun together. We went on wonderful day trips like hiking when we all got in the rain, visiting a lily farm where we revelled in the beauty of a vast variety of lilies, shopping when Roger & Daphne convinced us to buy a high end dog bed for our golden retriever who they loved. They were there to haul boxes when we moved in items from storage. We had dinners together and played games. Needless to say we will sincerely miss Roger and his radiant smile, gentle manner and the way he made us feel special just by being around him. We were truly blessed to have had him in our lives even for such a short time.

There are so many memories of Roger's influence and friendship through my years as a student and later as a teacher at Rockway Mennonite Collegiate. His strength of character and his skill as a teacher, coach and mentor were obvious to all who knew him. He pushed me to always try my best despite my lack of obvious proficiency at sports. As a result, I played on teams and helped with many things I would not have considered possible. I am not sure if he ever forgave me for costing him a pivotal technical foul with the basketball team in a key playoff game to the season. Let's hope so! Thank you, Roger for your expertise!
It is perhaps the personal memories that I have of my time with both Roger and Daphne that shaped me the most. Their example of empathy and support as a teenager and as an adult were exemplary. Lots of laughter with the goats and good food having been invited out to the farm. Know that you both have impacted many of us in your sphere of influence in so many varied ways.
A life well spent! Thank you. Daphne, Jeff and Bryan, know that the friendship and light of so many is here to support you. God bless.

It was hard to get the news. I had the utmost respect for Roger in all the years that I knew him, which began even before I joined the Rockway board in 1972 and later in my years as Rockway's Director of Development. Roger was an important and influential member of the Rockway faculty. We connected on a number of levels during this time and it was a privilege to support his efforts heading up the Phys-Ed department, raising funds to improve facilities, and often busing teams to numerous athletic events. My wife Margaret and I are deeply grateful for the values Roger exemplified/modeled for our children during their time at Rockway. Rockway teams were highly respected on the game floor because of his athletic leadership and coaching, consistent with his deep faith. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time and we are sorry we can't share a more physical closeness under these unusual circumstances. Glen Woolner, - Class of 1964

Dear Stover Family,
Your dear Roger not only had an eye for the basketball players on his team, but also on the opponents' team. I played for a high school team in Niagara-on-the-Lake (Eden) that back in the mid 1970s was in a private Christian school league with Rockway. On a number of occasions, he sought me out to offer kind words of encouragement. Daphne, Jeff, Bryan and families. I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you for letting Roger do all that coaching over the years. I had Roger as a teacher, coach, and peer. He was always patient with me as a student. He was always more concerned with big picture issues then with the smaller day to day things. We always knew he cared deeply for us as people first and then athletes. I will never forget one experience from OFSAA basketball 1985. He cracked open his briefcase, and there, beside his "to do" clipboard, was his Bible. I always knew it was important to him, but it struck me as to how important his faith was to his actions, taking the time for Bible study at an OFSAA tournament. That image has stayed with me and has been an inspiration for me in my life. Know that he had a huge positive impact on so many athletes, he will be missed.

I have many awesome memories of Roger, you are already missed.
Roger just related to each one in such a quiet, genuine way. An awesome humour and each word of his carried a lot of weight. I first met him in our church meetings when I was in college and his butterscotch pinwheels were always a hit at our Thursday night youth group evenings. I clearly recall him dropping off the lasagna that him and Daphne had made when our oldest son was born and he became an instant Grandfather to him and our other children later on, he cared so deeply. We had lovely barbeques at their house in Lisbon, watching the muskrats in the river and most recently we met him and Daphne for a campfire at Cyprus Lake in October!
One particular sharing that he shared with us in the meeting really sticks with me. He shared about how when he was a baker he loved the smell of breaking open the risen yeast and the beautiful smell that the yeast dough made and how we should be so fragrant that whenever we are touched we let off a lovely fragrance for those around us! Roger really was such a one that when we were with him he was filled with the enjoyment of the Lord!

Roger was my Basketball coaching model and mentor at Rockway. I had never coached before I came to Rockway and Roger taught me how to break down the game for players, and develop drills to help them learn the game. More importantly, Roger modelled how to relate to players. He was a sensitive person who was attuned to every player on his team, from his star player to the kid at the end of the bench. Roger coached at a time when many people's model of a coach was the Bobby Knight type, who demeaned players and belittled them. Roger went completely against that grain, showing that you could have success by building players up, not breaking them down. I've had many conversations with former players and fellow coaches since Roger retired and I know that Roger lives on in the hearts of many people in the Rockway community and in the Basketball community.
