I’m Kaleigh and Arthur was my Great Grandpa. I remember staying at his house for a few days in the summer and my parents were still asleep but we were both up so we decided walk to the grocery store to get some cupcakes for breakfast. Of corse we forgot to leave a note saying that we had left so my parents woke up and walked around the neighbourhood trying to find us and finally we got home and my parents were happy to have finally found us. But that was one of my many memories of me and Great Grandpa Haley!

My condolences to all who will be missing Arthur. Grandpa Haley was great fun when I was young, loved his puzzles and book collection, and he had an energy I know I'll only be more astonished about as time goes.

Arthur was a faithful volunteer at Wiarton Public School and Peninsula Shores District School. He came to my classroom for over two decades, sharing stories, poems and genuine friendliness with hundreds of students. In particular, his Remembrance Day presentations always involved describing how he had to leave his young family behind, comparing our school children to his own children, offering a unique understanding of the hardships of war that they could relate to.
I am sending condolences to the entire family and appreciation for the lovely photo tribute to his life. I didn't know he grew up in Burlington. Art was all about history and that video will be a perfect gift to the next generation!

Art was one of the first Wiartonians I met when we moved here in 1998 and was in the same book group and also the Friends of the Wiarton Library.
I was impressed with his wonderful smile, his quick step - he only had one speed- and his ability to remember names and faces. He sold me a number of Cornelius Krieghoff prints which remind me of him each time I look at them. At 98, when I had forgotten all about buying the prints, he remembered my interest in them. Amazing guy!
A community minded individual, he set a great example of good citizenship.
We share your sadness at this time and know that we are privileged to have had him as part of our lives.

Grandpa really loved kids!
When I grew up, my grandfather's had both passed away before I was born. It was a big void in my life. I was so happy to have a Grandpa when I married Lorena and could share hers. He really was the perfect grandfather for all family members. He was smart, loving, fun and always happiest when he was with his family and friends. He was also the perfect role model for being a dad, a grandfather and a citizen of Canada. Not only was he a decorated WWII veteran who survived the Normandy invasion and liberated France and Holland, but he was also the recipient of many community awards and recognition including a Governor General's award for his community service. My daughter loved Great Grandpa and he loved her. It felt like stepping back in time and coming home whenever we visited him at his house in Wiarton since my uncles all lived in Owen Sound when I was a kid. To summarize my memories of Grandpa Haley I think about love - love of friends, love of family, love of children, love of community, love of country and love of life. We are all going to miss you Grandpa. God bless you!

I first met Arthur some 50 years ago when my soon to be husband stood up with Cliff Gilbert at his wedding to Sharon, Art's daughter. I was always impressed with the spring in his step, which continued well into his 100+ years. He had a wonderful 'gift of the gab' which led to books and Haley's Comments in the Echo, enjoyed by many. About 8 years ago, we found out we shared Sept. 13 as our birthdays, and after that cards to each other passed in the post. Ida and I went to the 100th party together, and so glad we did. You all have such wonderful memories of your Father, Grandfather and on again for two more generations!! ...
treasure those memories of this wonderful man. Sue Dyment

Our deepest condolences to all of Art's extended family. Art was a man I deeply admired and was truly an inspiration to us all. His keen wit, integrity & sense of humor will be missed by all that had the pleasure to know him. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word and just seemed to defy age. He accomplished so much in his long life & I consider myself lucky to have spent time with him at family gatherings conversing with Art about his many, many life experiences. Art's passing has left the community & his family a little less whole and with a void that will be hard to fill. May he rest in peace and his legacy live on in our memories of the great man he was
