I am saddened to hear of the passing of Ivan Smith. I just wanted to send my love to his family and friends. I worked at Bruce Peninsula National Park as a U of W co-op student back in 2000 and 2001. Ivan was always encouraging and supportive to all his staff, especially the students who worked for him. I have fond memories of my time at Bruce Peninsula National Park. May Ivan rest in peace.

I was shocked to hear of Ivan's death. I knew Ivan through curling and the NDP. While I haven't been curling in recent years I remember him well. He was such a fun skip and I always enjoyed curling with him. He lived his commitment to the democratic principles of his chosen party. I will miss him and his gentle spirit. Rest in peace, Ivan.

I am so thankful for the time I had with Ivan and sad I lost touch with him after leaving Tobermory. I have been wondering how best to describe my friendship with Ivan and the best way to sum it up is that he was the right person in my life at the right time…the type of person who can (and did] make all the difference in a young woman’s life. When I arrived at Bruce Peninsula National Park, in 2001 I was very unsettled - looking for a career, missing my life out west and up north, grieving a relationship. I was also recovering from a series of jobs where serial harassment of women was rampant.
During my time at the Bruce, I had the fortune to have Ivan as a supervisor and then friend and mentor. Looking back, it was one of those points in my life when any direction was possible, but I second guessed any decision I made. Ivan supported me in challenging myself and helped me discover strengths I hadn’t known, or had confidence in. He was a kind and gentle soul with an impish sense of humour, who always had a twinkle in his eye, kind and encouraging words and thoughtful questions for me.
I recall chatting with him about his plan to hike the Bruce Trail, in its entirety, in small segments, his strange passing desire for a gold tooth (Pam said no), his stories of growing up in the maritimes and being made fun of for having lobster sandwiches; and he and Don Wilkes lobbing water balloons at me at a gathering at Emmett Lake, where I lived my first summer. And always, his deep love for Pam, Jason and Nancy.
I am thankful to have had the chance to catch up with him and Nancy a few weeks ago. I will miss him.

We were fortunate enough to have the Smith family as next door neighbours in New Perth, PEI. The Smith boys were wonderful and great friends. After we moved to Blackie, Alberta Ivan joined us at the cattle ranch where Lowell worked and we lived. Lowell was away at a cattle show when our first daughter arrived. We were about an hour from the hospital in Calgary and Ivan drove me in. We will always remember his kindness. Our deepest sympathies are with his family at this difficult time. A wonderful life taken too soon. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Sincerely Lowell & Glenda Roberts

Dear Nancy and family, so sorry for your loss. Ivan was a kind man who cared deeply. He was thoughtful in word and deed. Ivan gave me just the nudge I needed when I needed it to encourage me to take our family travelling. Ivan had vision and could see the big picture. I valued our conversation over lunch or in passing. I also felt valued and that my thoughts mattered to him. Wish we could have got together to teach me how to make his fudge. I will treasure the memories I have of Ivan and will try and do justice to the fudge. Big hugs to you Nancy. Rest peacefully Ivan.

Ivan was so very special to me . Our rides to Lions Head were so much more than car pooling. Ivan and I always entered into very deep personal & philosophical conversations about everything & anything. I felt truly like I could trust him with my soul….and at times I did. Anne and I are extremely saddened by the news of the passing of Ivan. Our sincere condolences to Nancy, Jason, Pam and their families. My children were quite shocked by the news as they remember when Ivan used to come to Cornwall in the early days of the establishment of the the Bruce and Fathom Five. Ivan and I travelled frequently together back then and had a good time working together. Ivan was always very thoughtful and professional in the time I spent working with him. After leaving Parks Canada in 2000 we kept in touch and would chat about kids, family and old friends. Our hearts go out to you Nancy, and your family.

So sorry to learn of Ivan's passing and our deepest condolences to Nancy, Pam, Jason and your families. We came to Tobermory in 1988 at the same time as Ivan and Nancy to get the new national parks started and for twenty years we were colleagues on the management team. We sat through hundreds of meeting together, travelled together, worked on many projects together, and shared many laughs. Ivan had a hugh impact on Fathom Five National Marine Park and Fathom Five National Marine Park and had a big hand in making the parks what they are today. He was a great friend, a good leader, a forward thinker and a committed conservationist. I, particularly, valued working with Ivan on the visitor centre project which had many ups and downs but which he soldiered through, lead the team, coordinated the complex architectual and construction elements and trusted the staff to do their roles. The project was a huge success and for this I will be forever grateful to him. I have admired how generous Ivan has been with his time to the community and how positive his has alway been through the difficult times. I find it hard to believe that he is gone but certainly his significant legacy is not. Rest peacefully good friend. Don and Gwenda Wilkes

Nancy, Jason and Alana, Pamela and Carl, Norman and Joy, Paul and Lorna, Miriam and the treasured grandchildren:
Ivan has touched the hearts of many family and friends. We share so many memories of our childhood days in New Perth. Many hours were spent together in a one room school, playing ball, skating on ponds, and just enjoying any outdoor activity we could dream up. Ivan was always so considerate, including everyone in every activity we created. He carried the Smith trait of always being kind.
Sending love from Dale and Joan

Nancy and Family Our deepest sympathies to you. We will miss our golfing buddy dearly. He was not only a golfing partner, but a great friend. It was something we all looked forward to each fall, getting together, travelling to Myrtle Beach or wherever, getting caught up on family, friends, news and politics, along with playing golf. Sometimes good scores, and other times not so much, but most important was getting together over those many years and being able to share those experiences as friends. This is what made our friendship enduring.
Ivan would check in with folks during the "off season" to see how we were doing. He was great company and partner on and off the golf course and his passion and concern for his family, and community was always evident, the traits of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Thanks Ivan for being a part of those wonderful memories. Again our condolences and sympathies to you

Dear Nancy, Jason, Pam and Family,
Words cannot express our extreme sorrow in hearing that Ivan has passed. You have lost a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who was a shining example of a kind, loving and compassionate gentleman. Ivan set the bar really high in showing all those he knew how to live their lives. The world definitely needs more people like him. He fought the good fight with courage and has been taken from all of us way too soon for such a fine and decent man. I know Ivan will be missed by all those who were fortunate to have had the pleasure of having him in their lives; friends, acquaintances and all those who he has worked with over the years.
Personally, my fondest memories of Ivan are from many years ago when, as a youngster, I looked forward to those trips to PEI with my family to visit with him, Terry, Norman, Paul, Aunt Kay and Uncle Kitch. Playing ball, golfing, stawberry socials, visiting neighbours and always getting hay fever when I tried to help out when they were baling hay. Even though he was teased by his brothers for being the youngest, he always held his own and anyone could see there was so much love to go around. Those were good times.
Our sincere and loving condolences to all of you, including Norman, Joy, Paul, Lorna and Miriam and your families at this most difficult time.
May the memories you hold dear be a blessing to you.
Sincerely,
Gord, Joanne, Jessie, Abby and Tyler

We are so fortunate to be a neighbour and friend of Ivan and Nancy for a long time and especially benefited over the past four years as he helped Doug through his own medical journey. Ivan's character is well reflected in the heartwarming tributes here. We also really appreciated his sense of humour and humility. He made an outstanding contribution to the 2021 Eagle Road Snowman competition and since his well constructed entry didn't make it into the newspaper we felt it deserved to be shared here. We are missing him greatly and standing by his family just as he did for so many others. Daryl Wood and Doug Dailey

Hello to Ivan's family,
I worked with Ivan at the Trent-Severn Waterway when he came over in the late 1980's early 1990's. I was northern Area Manager..Ivan was central area manager. He was easy to work with, friendly, and kind. We stayed in touch through Facebook most recently...I post a lot, and Ivan commented from time to time. We got along well, and although we didn't get to visit or socialize except online, I will miss him a lot. I'm sorry for your loss, and glad that you had the privilege of having him in your lives. Our New Perth, PEI family continue to value the relationships we shared with the Smith family. As an age mate of Ivan's I am blessed with many recollections of a country school friend who was smart, witty and kind and remained that way though all his life. Nancy and Ivan extended Ron and I gracious Bruce Peninsula hospitality a few summers back, Ivan being so pleased to share the beauties of the Park he knew so well. Speaking by phone not long ago, Ivan's priority was that Nancy manage all on her plate. May the sadness you each carry assure you of lasting loving bonds, Nancy, Jason and Alana, Pamela and Carl, the treasured grandchildren, and the PEI family- Paul & Lorna, Norman & Joy, Miriam and your families.

Ella and I would like to convey our sincere condolences to Nancy and the entire Smith family in the passing of Ivan. I got to know Ivan as a fellow Parks Canada colleague, and knew from the outset what a classy gentleman he was! I filled his post at Bruce Peninsula NP for one winter season and quickly realized that I had big shoes to fill. As recently as 2 summers ago, we had lunch with Ivan & Nancy as we came off the ferry from Manitoulin Island! I am thrilled that we had that visit on that restaurant patio. Ivan was a great friend and colleague - we will all miss him! Rest In Peace brother!
