The Railway Man
Met that Railway Man back in seventy-five
Young, clean shaven, ambitious and alive
Said he’d started young working on the rail
And couldn’t imagine any other trail
That the railroad was his family forever
And for him there was no better endeavor
A quiet fellow, dedicated, loyal and true
Humble, generous, would do anything for you
He’d already seen how things could go off track
Leaving the man in the mirror to handle the flack
He developed some wisdom in how to proceed
Doubled his effort and picked up some speed
So old number nine went down the line
Around the bend and forward in time
Always moving, Jim never looked back
Anytime is train time and he stayed on track
He enforced the rules and handled derailments
A trainmaster’s job is fraught with assailments
Crossings may be protected by gates, lights and bell
But man you can’t forget to sound whistle 14L
And low and behold he made the top of the heap
Cornelius Van Horne, moustache, bearded and deep
He lived a full life with many a care
And often did what others never would dare
He gave advice freely to those who would hear
Tolerated fools and delivered a lot of good cheer
He hunted and labored and left his mark in many ways
On all who loved him and shared his adventurous days
His 24 hour pocket watch reported his sudden arrival
On board that train on route to eternal survival
May the circle be unbroken and his train speed through
To Glory Land Station where we all will rendez-vous.
May Jim rest in peace and may his memory be a blessing to all those who knew and loved him.

Jim was never too busy to say hello or stop for a friendly chat. In fact, our best talk was only ten days ago after closing time.
