Ted, hearing of Carmel’s passing was an absolute shock. I can’t imagine what you are going through. Sharing one of my favourite pictures of Carmel and Sadie, when Sadie was just a few months old. Carmel lit up when her granddaughters came to visit. She loved to cuddle and spoil them, and her joy and laughter was contagious. Sending all our love and strength to you and the family. Kim.

On hearing of Carmel's death, a former member of the Board of Co-operators observed that "Carmel was the person one turned to to get things done." Another person said, "I never would have survived as a director without her." These themes have been echoed over and over again in the many messages shared among current and former board members in the weeks since we learned the terrible news. Even directors who have been off the scene for 20 years remember Carmel with reverance. To our eyes, she was as hardworking, helpful, conscientious and loyal as they come and, perhaps above all else, practical. Yes, she could be stubborn, but she was ready to cede her position in the face of a good argument and she always paid us the utmost respect. We saw another side of Carmel too. She was a deeply caring individual. When tough things happened in our lives outside the Board, Carmel was right there, offering her support. I don't think I'm alone in saying that I had counted on staying in touch with her after her retirement.
To you Ted and to your wider family and Carmel's I offer my deepest condolences.

I was so saddened to hear of Carmel's passing. My condolences to Ted and family. Carmel was the go to compliance person at Co-operators. I had the added benefit of Carmel serving on our Pension Committee, which she did for many years. She will be sorely missed.

We are saddened and shocked to learn of Carmel’s passing. Many members of our team have worked closely with Carmel in recent years. All were impressed by her professionalism, her deep governance knowledge and expertise, her genuine care for the Board’s smooth-running, and her desire to help each and every Director be the best they could be.
But we also reflect on Carmel the individual, her kindness and patience, her interest and concern for those with whom she worked, the passion she had for life, and the love she so obviously had for her family.
Her loss will be felt deeply by many, including the WATSON team.
We send our deepest condolences to Carmel's family and loved ones.

Ted and Family,
I'm heartbroken by the loss of our beloved Carmel. Throughout my life she was a constant figure. She was my first "employer" when she "hired" me as a child, where I worked alongside her in the Boardroom at the big table stuffing envelopes. I thought I had made it! She's a key reason that I'm closing in on 25 years at Co-operators - she was the one to share the job posting that brought me to Co-op and she encouraged me to apply. Even though Dad had encouraged me to blaze my own trail elsewhere, she knew him so well that she was certain he'd be happy and proud if I was to be hired on. She really took time to know people. She loved her family and friends fully and she never backed down from a challenge or obstacle. She was dedicated to her work and she emulated grace, had a strong work ethic, discipline and an iron-will. For me, she was a staple in my life. She was there for family dinners, was our "Find our Dad" app (long before modern tech), she was Mum's travel buddy, my take-no-prisoners crib partner. She was the most photogenic person I know, and her giggle will stay with me always. She was my first work mentor and an early champion in my career and I'm so grateful to have had her in my life. She will forever be a part of the Deters family and she will be so missed.

I can’t seem to find the words to truly express how shocked and saddened I was to learn of Carmel’s passing. I was privileged to call her my colleague, but most of all, friend. I enjoyed learning from her and getting to know her on a personal level. She was kind, thoughtful and generous with her time. When she loved, she loved hard, and this was evident every time I saw her and Ted together. Ted, my deepest condolences to you and the entire family. I was so upset to hear about Carmel’s passing. Carmel and I were Directors at GPC and we worked closely together. I frequently sat with her and sometimes with Ted too during GPC dinners or lunches. On a personal note, we were friends. Twice I had driven up to Guelph to have lunch with her. At our conference last year in Kelowna, Carmel was so nice to me - taking me out for a lunch so we could once again bond with each other. I remember her intelligence and her thoughtful input on GPC matters. Most of all I will remember her smile. I will miss her.

Ted, my deepest condolences on the passing of Carmel. Her genuine warmth, caring, and compassion for those around her will be sorely missed. I had the privilege of calling Carmel a friend and colleague for 20 years and I am heart broken by her passing. She was a trusted advisor to many, myself included. She often kept me out of trouble with sage counsel. She was a champion of our co-operative nature and held our purpose close. Carmel loved to golf and I thoroughly enjoyed the times we played together. Albeit a bit repetitive at times... every shot of hers right down the middle of the fairway. She would often share discoveries of new golf courses and deals on green fees with me which was always appreciated. It is impossible to put into words the contributions and the impacts that someone like Carmel had over a 42 year career with Co-operators. All I can say is that we are all better for having had the opportunity to know Carmel and experience life with her.

It's been a few days of shock and deep sadness after learning of Carmel's passing. It's also been a few days of reminiscing about happy times spent with Carmel at CDSL many moons ago. She was my boss, a teacher, a mentor, a big sister and, at times, a Mom to me as I navigated the working world during my highschool and university summer breaks. When I started my full-time job at CDSL, Carmel was never too busy for a chat and to share some words of wisdom about life and love.
I am lucky to have had someone as caring as Carmel in my life. She will never be forgotten and will always be thought of fondly.

Gerry and I were heartbroken to learn Carmel's passing. Gone much too soon.
Gerry and I were so pleased to meet Carmel and Ted when they were scouting in Oro Valley for a townhouse to purchase. With great luck they purchased in our complex. We were the only 4 Canadians at Horizon Heights and we formed a special bond. Over the winter months for many years, we dined at each other's home. Carmel was a cook extraordinaire. We also golfed and enjoyed many games of cribbage. Prior to returning to Canada this spring, Carmel and I enjoyed a day at the Miraval Resort in Catalina AZ, which is where we took the selfie. She looked so healthy in this photo. What a special memory I have of that day. Within weeks Carmel was gone.
Carmel, we wanted you for a much much longer time. Ted, Isabelle, Carol, and families, we share in your grief.

Ted, family, good friends,
Carm was such a very dear friend for over 40 years. We went through every life journey you could possibly imagine together. I always knew she was there for me and she knew I was there for her.
I've had a roller coaster of emotions over the past several weeks but one of the strongest right now is that of gratitude.
Never have I met a more strong willed, or as we liked to say, “determined” person than Carmel. When she set her mind on something she gave it her all. She had such a strong drive and her actions always expressed her love, support or concern for others.
Dave and I will always cherish the many, many wonderful memories of our times spent with both Carmel and Ted. No matter where they lived their home was always open and welcoming of us.
Our children will also remember their adventures on the boat in Lion's Head which included Carm's beloved fur baby Kokanee.
So many memories to treasure and such gratitude for having had her in my life.
One of Carmel and my frequent sayings was “I'm the luckiest person I know”. Both her beloved grandma and my own father used to say this even during the hardest times.
I am forever grateful, thankful and a lucky person indeed for having had Carmel as my dearest friend for so many years.
Carmel loved to laugh, tease, tell some good stories and make new friends.
Ted and Carm have a wonderful community of neighbours and friends in both Cobble Beach and Arizona. They also have many lifelong friends who will never forget this vibrant, strong, compassionate young woman ... our Carmie.
Love and hugs are being sent to Kiana, the light of your auntie's life.
Very recently Carmel sent me this poem .. “Live now”. I promised her I would try to do just that. I hope you will too. Life is a gift. Cherish each and every day.

Dear Ted and family,
Such a range of emotions when I heard the awful news of Carmel's passing. Life is just not fair to have taken such a good person when so many evil people continue to live.
Carmel was so generous and welcoming to me when the CUMIS organization was acquired by Co-operators. She was one of the first Co-operators employees to welcome me and one of the last I had lunch with on my retirement last year. I had planned to celebrate her retirement with her as well so not being able to see her again will be one of my greatest regrets.
Carmel was a consumate professional and her love of governance and Co-operators was secondary only to you and family. Preparing for the annual meeting cycle can be a bit of a grind, but Carmel ensured that the governance aspects were executed flawlessly. But after the final gavel concluded the meeting she looked forward to her time with you in Arizona or a trip out West.
My sincere condolences to you and families for the loss of our dear Carmel much too soon.

Tim and I are deeply saddened to hear of Carmel’s passing.
I have been honored to call Carmel “friend” for the past 10 years. I met Carmel and Ted when they purchased the condo across the street from me in Oro Valley, Arizona. Carmel spent much of her vacation time there and I benefited greatly from it. Over the years we spent many holidays together, along with dinner parties and cribbage nights. Carmel loved my dog, Macie, and Macie adored her. When I met my husband in 2019, she welcomed him too with open arms.
Carmel was such a kind and generous person. She taught me how to play cribbage, included me in golf plans once I retired, had me over for dinner too many times to count and she always incorporated my favorite foods into her dinner menu. She was an excellent cook and hostess. Carmel was also my cribbage partner and together we were the reigning champs over “the boys” (Ted and Stan) for two years straight. I will treasure these memories, always.
Carmel and I shared many laughs together that I will miss very much, but what I will miss most is her friendship.
To Ted and all of Carmel’s family and closest friends: You have our deepest condolences for your profound loss. May all the fond memories you have of Carmel offer you comfort during this very sad time.

I’ve been staring at this space for a long time trying to figure out how to express the many emotions Carmel’s passing has stirred. My heart is so very heavy for you Ted as you try to make sense of losing this wonderful lady far too soon. I can only imagine the sadness in the family whom she loved so dearly and who loved her back just as much. Listening to her excitement as she talked about an upcoming visit with her niece and family out west was such strong evidence of that love.
I got to work with Carmel for quite a few years. The memories are many and range from laughter in the hospitality room at board meetings as we unwound in the evening over a ‘friendly’ game (or 5) of euchre or crib. Boy she was good! Or serious moments when she invoked that very special way she had of admonishing you or setting you straight without you realizing what hit you. Or those caring moments when those beautiful blue eyes let you know she was listening and cared deeply. She instilled confidence and loyalty in the people who had the privilege of working with her. We all learned from her and are fortunate to have had her in our orb for the years we did. That picture is perfect…beautiful lady, beautiful smile, beautiful soul.

To Carmel’s family, I am so saddened and shocked. Carmel and I attended Marden grade school together and I have so many fond memories growing up with her. Carmel and I loved swimming in the creek in her back yard where the Guelph Lake is now. And Carol, you being the little sister who followed us everywhere. We had the best Barbie doll clothing (that my mom made) and homemade furniture and spent many an hour playing with our Barbies! I smile thinking about all our childhood laughter. Thank you Isabelle and my mom for continuing our friendship when you moved to Morristown. And I chuckle about our high school shenanigans. We lost touch about 10 years ago and just last week I thought it was due time I looked her up. This is a sad reminder to live in the present time and don’t put off what is important in life. Big hugs to Isabelle and Carol. Xoxoxo

I worked with Carmel off and on the past 20 years at Co-operators. You never had to guess her thoughts on things at work as she was very clear with her opinion and directives - I really appreciated that. She was always very kind to me. I will fondly remember a long cab ride with her to the airport after one of our annual meetings. Our annual meetings were always a particularly demanding and busy time for her. During this cab ride, she had her golf clubs with her and her sparkly eyes lit up as she spoke fondly of golf and the time she was going to spend with people she cared about. I worked directly with carmel for over 25 years. She was my friend and trusted colleague. She was incredibly smart, had an amazingly retentive and analytical mind and helped me many times to be successful in my own life and career. She was likely the hardest working person I have ever met. It was a great fortune in my life to get to know both her and Ted. I had the chance many times to travel with her and Ted and to visit their beloved second home in Arizona. I will truly miss her and her immense generosity with her brilliance and her generosity. She loved her family, adored her niece who she spoke of often and loved Ted and his family equally. I hope that wherever she is she can look down and know how many people she touched and that “she mattered and will truly be missed”. And a shout out to her close friends who she and Ted spent time with and played golf with. She loved you all. You know who you are so I won’t mention names. I remember her sending a picture of a few of you sitting on my deck in collingwood having a brewskie when I wasn’t even there. Truly an amazing friend.
