Obituary of Stephen Hersant

HERSANT, Stephen Michaelof Mar passed away peacefully, with his wife Beth by his side, at the Lion's Head Hospital on Saturday, September 11, 2010. He is survived by his devoted wife Beth, his sister Janet and Jim Camplin and niece Annie Davey. Also survived by his step daughters Karen O'Meara and Lisa Mathiasen as well as their families. He was 'Grampa Scub' to Karen and Lisa's children Madeline, Thomas, Chloe and Oliver. Stephen's two sisters-in-law Susan and Carolyn were very special to him, as was his brother-in-law John (aka Pumpkinhead). Stephen was affectionaly known as 'The Scubbler' by those close to him for the last 25 years and always lovingly known as Te' by his sister Janet.Born on December 27, 1949 in Bournemouth, England he moved to Toronto, Ontario with his family at the age of 10. Stephen always possessed an immense appreciation for nature and a great love of all animals, especially Golden Retrievers (aka 'Jubbs'). Stephen was a kind hearted, generous man who donated blood to the Red Cross over 65 times and received a 'Snow Goose' award for saving the life of a young child at the Vancouver Airport. While residing in B.C. he repaired and restored over 500 bicycles and became affectionately known by the locals as 'The Bike Guy'. Many a bike was kindly given to a child or adult in need. His passions included nature photography, inventing gadgets, hiking, canoeing, camping and motorcycles. Stephen's favourite places in Canada were British Columbia, the Yukon and in his final years, the Bruce Peninsula. He fought a courageous seven month battle with cancer and although his life was not as long as he had hoped for, it was a remarkable life, overflowing with passion, creativity and joyous adventure. Stephen will be sadly missed by all who loved and knew him well. A tree will be planted in his memory through the Grey Sauble Conservation Foundation.In respect of Stephen's wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no funeral home visitation or service. Arrangements entrusted to the GEORGE FUNERAL HOME, Wiarton. Donations made to the Lion's Head Hospital would be appreciated by the family as expressions of sympathy.
