Pat loved school. Perhaps it was the influence of our Grampa Nelson. He was a school teacher; and by then he was a school principal in Owen Sound. In Toronto, we happened to live just two city blocks from our elementary school. There were no school buses; we always walked.
When Pat was about 10, we had a terrific snow storm. To give an idea of how deep the snow was, Dad forbade me to leave the front veranda. (I was only four and my legs were too short to plow through the drifts.)
But Pat, she was determined not to miss a day of school. She plowed her way through. The snow was so bad that most of the students didn’t show up -- many of the teachers, too. The one teacher who did get there, happened to be the one who could operate the movie projector. He showed movies to the few kids who showed up. For Pat, it was one of the best school days of her life! (We didn't get to see many movies, in those days.) Pat had already decided to become a school teacher!
