Judith and family,
I am very sorry to hear about Ernie. I just came upon his obituary on the internet.
My Dad, Don Robertson, who passed away some 30 years ago after a lengthy battle with cancer, considered Ernie a good friend. They were motorcycling buddies and both shared a passion for rebuilding cars. Ernie was a larger than life character, who was always willing to lend a hand. I remember as a kid attending home made fireworks shows in Hamilton, I remember a parrot that wasn't very friendly and liked to bite. I remember watching videos of his trips down the Baja.
I have attached a photo of Ernie sitting in my VW camper van taken at my Dad's place in New Brunswick in the late 80s. Ernie made the trip to the Maritimes bringing along a rebuilt motor for the van.
My mom sends her condolences.
Take care,
Rob

Dear Aunty Judy, Cathy, Laurie, Ernie and all of the Family.
Thinking about you at this difficult and sad time.
I will always remember Uncle Ernie back in simpler days when there would be more than 20 Abels, Laxtons, Gaskells and so on, all together celebrating a life event or a special holiday.
Love you all,

Ernie gone, wow!
So many years ago I called him at Isaac Lake about a part for whatever VW I had. Ern assured me he would find the part if I would just drop by the LCBO and purchase a particular California wine...
It was years later that I met Judith, "Jude" to me, who has to be the most supportive wife known to the human race. Judith, I am so sorry for your loss and hope that you continue to find yourself in the days and years ahead. I have the utmost respect for you.
This series of tributes speaks for itself. Ern was a remarkable man in so many ways. I am glad that I have known him. RIP Ernie.

My dearest condolences to Judith and family and friends
Its young Bill here as Ernesto would call me....... wow where does almost 30 years go ? Someone should have made a reality show on a day in the life of Ernesto..........would have been a smashing hit. What can i say .... I meant Ernesto in my late teens, drove my first Beetle up at the Isaac lake home....and of course no floor some 2x4 s and a milk crate and a way you go. He was my Boss , mentor, innovator ,teacher and then friend.
Before Google we had Ernesto....you could call him about a problem or looking for a parts etc. if he didn't know off the top of his head or he'd get back to you with someone who did or with the solution. I learned many thing's over the years from him. while wrenching he'd be teaching me some spanish and german. as well, never a dull moment. stop mid day........it's cocktail hour lets take a break and have a cerveza or two and when he took his break he would be on the phone too. get into the sand rail with some cerveza s and we'd go cut the grass . the list could go on and on. the one thing that come to my mind always is the Poster in the shop. Murpy's Law and then there's Ernie's Laws ......What can go wrong will go wrong.......and goes from there and keep adding to your own list.
All in all i 'll try to share what i learned and was taught to me to the Vw force out there and make it fun .
Cheers ! Amigo and thanks for sharing your knowledge of a living genius !

Ernie's passing gave us pause to take some time to remember how a great friendship began.
Some years back Jim was at a Sauble Cruise Night enjoying the sights. When he returned to our buggy there was this interesting looking character with his signature bling standing beside it. As it was a VW he was clearly waiting for the owner's return. As he whacked our yellow sandrail with his trusty cane his first words to Jim were, 'My name is Ernie Abel & I know everything about these things.' His reputation had preceded him as John (John's Bug Shop) had given us his contact info and we had been meaning to call him.
One thing led to another as we got to know Ernie & Judith. Visits & dinners led to him helping us with our buggy & Jim was given the honour of building his Garage-Mahal.
Thanks to Mark Brown & Paul Wismer his memory will live on as from out of the ashes of their shop explosion came the motor from Ernie's purple buggy. It was rebuilt and has become the heart of our yellow sandrail. It is the last motor Ernie had his hands on before their move to Seasons.
We appreciated their company & hospitality as well as their knack for making and keeping connections with great people. The VW crowd is a great bunch. We are thinking of Judith & all who loved him. He will be remembered!

Hello Judith and family.
I am deeply saddened to receive the news of Ernie's passing. I am having difficulty to relinquish Ernie to the fate of a mortal life.
Like the many previous posts already outline, Ernie was an elemental force of motivation in my love of the VW lifestyle.
I can name countless days of lawn maintenance at the Isaac Lake campus in pursuit of payment for my VW-scholarship. Many lessons in patience, forgiveness and acceptance were afforded this sophomore during my education.
But, life at the school of Ernie was not all sweat and toil. I learned to dance the 'Ernie's Bug Shop Shuffle'. I learned the meaning of precision, accuracy and accountability --to put the tools back EXACTLY where I found them! And, I learned to place the $100 bill on the outside of my wad; because, even money itself needs be afforded that extra flair when being shown off.
I am lucky to have been Ernie's passenger and companion on our 1996 trip across the continent to California, Lapaz and back through Las Vegas; on which, Ernie offered a glimpse into style wrapped in adventure, and insight into the opportunity in the gift of each day.
Simply put, Ernie, I am honoured to have been invited into your life on that muggy late-spring day some twenty-plus years ago, when you agreed to take me on as an apprentice to the opus that is your legacy.
I'm glad you saw potential in this student.
You're mentorship and friendship will not soon be forgotten.
I'll miss you much Dude.

I like this photo of Dad in the garage especially the prominence of the blow torch to light his cigarette, and WD 40 which he used for a lot of things. I think that's the hat that got munched up by the lawn mower and later pinned to the wall because it was his favourite hat. - Laurie

We wish to convey our condolences to Judith and the entire family with the sudden passing of Ernie. As longtime friends (>50 years), Ernie was always a unique character - a composition of intelligence, mechanical aptitude, free spirit, independence and social being. As well, he was blessed with competitiveness and friendship that resonated from a jovial and carefree/youthful attitude.
We will miss chatting and having a laugh with him whenever we discussed past and more recent experiences in his adventure-filled life.
Ernie, rest in peace, and if there are any angel-driven chariots in heaven you will soon have them all modified/souped-up and ready for thrilling rides, one of which will be #53 for sure!

Tony and Vicki.
It is going on 60 years ago when I first met Ernie in Hamilton, we became friends instantly. As a stranger to Canada Ernie made me feel comfortable and introduced me to his family where I enjoyed many wonderful meals. He also showed me the ropes in buying my first car.
The one thing we had in common was motorcycling , so with our Honda trail bikes we would spend many a Sunday riding the trails around Dundas in all kinds of weather. One of my highlights was riding our bikes out to the end of Long Point on Lake Erie.
Another memory was Vicky and me celebrating New Years Eve with Judy and Ernie and other friends. We would play Spoons, enjoy a good steak and make lots of noise.
We will remember Ernie as going out of his way to be helpful and always looking for a good deal and being a great friend!.
We will miss you Ernie Tony, Vicki and Family.

Where does one begin to share my heartfelt feelings of Ernie Abel. He was simply larger than life. My journey through life with Ernie began many years ago through the many visits to repair my Dad's VW bus. We would travel countless miles to his "garage" out in the fields where we would be attacked by the bugs but then quickly found ourselves laughing while both Ernie and my Dad told stories about what really needed to be repaired. When my Dad passed suddenly in 2006, Ernie was one of the first people to make point of calling and visiting to share his stories of his friendship. We had many subsequent visits with Ernie over the years at the house. Whether a laugh about US politics, VW repairs or his dream to make his return visit to Las Vegas, he always shared his zest for life. While I lost as very dear friend, I know that both Ernie and my Dad are sharing a long overdue discussion about politics and VW's. Rest well my friend, I will miss you so very much.

My heart goes out to Judith and family. I imagine you now will have a big emptiness to fill, but I am sure the love you have will get you through this sad time.
Got change for a $1000? Ernie certainly was a character. It seemed people either loved him or not. I think many people just did not really understand Ernie. He had a heart of gold, a mouth that needed washed out with soap for all the 'cuss' words, a mind like a steel trap, and a singing voice like an angel :) Then, there was the VW Guru genius. The fist time I ever met Ernie at the Niagara Junefest, he offered to help me rebuilt a motor. That's the kind of person Ernie was. After the first motor went up in flames, Ernie helped me build a 1904 cc motor in the 'Blue Room' - the time between the two Garage Mahals. Ernie always liked having things done HIS way, because of course, he was always right :)
I miss him already.

Dear Old Friend,
I remember the first time I met you, about 30 years ago. You were lighting a cigarette with a blow torch and giving your opinion for all to hear about the no good #%^ who had done the work on the Bug in your shop that you now had to correct! I had a 71 Beetle at the time. You showed me how to fix the problem on my car and wouldn't charge me. I ended up spending many Saturdays learning all manner of things about Beetles by working under your direction, and just for fun. My wife thought I was out of my mind, but what was her point? I remember the road trip we took together in the 90's driving non-stop from Wiarton to Los Angeles in four days. I dropped you off at LAX for your flight to Cabo after a trip where the muffler fell off in the middle of nowhere, the generator died just outside Las Vegas, and you were practicing Spanish pretty much all the time. Ern, being your friend was not for the fainthearted, but I would not trade the experience and the memories for anything in the world. Vaya con Dios, Amigo.

So sorry Judith and Family to hear of the loss of Ernie. As you know Judith, I had just spoken with Ernie about a week ago. And he seemed to be his usual self. This came out of nowhere for me and the girls were just overwhelmed with sadness to hear of his passing.
I first met Ernie and Judith up at Isaac Lake at their home where we wrecklessly raced our homemade dunebuggys, lot of fun lots of laughs. It started a lifetime of going to Ernie's where I bought my very first Volkswagen, and the knowledge he imparted from who I consider to be the "Volkswagen God" over the years, and trips to get parts. Or times spent at the Sauble Beach Speedway watching Ernie and my brother in law race there.
I will forever be indebted to Ernie and Judith. Their love for Volkswagens started years of what they are also known for starting
Volkswagen "Bug Out", and Bug Out #2 where I first met my wife of 30 years ago. Lots of happy memories going there.
Many who knew Ernie and started their own projects will I am sure tell you that he loved helping us "newbies" with their projects. And when we completed them, he also took great pride in our accomplishments and his contributions.
As years went on, and I brought project after project up to show Ernie, the greatest compliment he paid me was that he knew how talented he was with building engines, but he said "Man I can't do what you do, the actual builiding of your cars, they are a showpiece".
In later years, he bonded with Krista and Katie, and revelled at being able to converse with them about cars, and how much they knew about Volkswagens. That's something coming from Ernie. They grew to work on their own, and bring their cars to show him.
More recently he continued to enjoy "Mini Bug Out" and wanted us all there which we were, to do what Ernie loved best bringing the Volkswagen community together, sharing stories and memories of days gone by. It was the Sandfest weekend but more importantly usually my Wedding Anniversary, a full circle moment for Michele and I. It seemed fitting.
In the last number of years, Ernie called me many times to come up, to help he was coaching on a project but couldn't be hands on. It was a priviledge to help Ernie, he had helped me for years.
Of late, I was working on my Volkswagen Bus, we spoke of it every time he called. He asked me how it was coming, he was still sharing his knowledge a week ago when we spoke.
My only regret is that I did not get this done in time. Michele and I had just spoke about getting it done, so we could take Ernie for a ride in it. Ernie did things on his own terms, and hated the hospital so as difficult as this is to accept, I believe he left this world on his own terms. I can only hope that when this bus is finally done, you will be watching down from above as we take a cruise in your honour in tribute to you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Judith. RIP Ernie.

My condolences to Judith and her family. Ernie helped so many of us with our VW's and promoted VW mania for decades. He was always happy to share his knowledge and enthusiasm. I first met Ernie about 30 years ago through the KWA Bug Club. He built a 1600 for my 65 Westy which kept my daily driver on the road for over a decade. He was always keen to hear how things were going with your VW and swap stories.
When I discovered Vanagon Syncro's and called Ernie to see what he knew about them, he found one for me in Wiarton. I always wondered if Ernie persuaded the owner to sell it to me. About 2 years ago he sold me his "FINGA", his wheelchair lift equipped Vanagon with a 2.4 - a Vanagon sports car. Thanks to Ernie I now have a "fleet" of Vanagons.
Over the past year or so, Ernie and I talked about a plan for the two of us to drive down to Las Vegas in his Impala. He wanted to play poker (and teach me) and visit his friends in Mexico. He wanted to drive again (his licence was revoked in Canada, but not Mexico!). A new take on Fear and Loathing in Las Vega, Ernie style. Alas, COVID delayed this mad plan.
We are all in his debt and he will be missed, especially at the next Bug Out. Thank you Ernie.

I would say that I’ve known Ernie for all my life. First as a neighbour, then as an employee and most importantly, as a friend.
Ernie was known for taking a chance on a young fellow by trying to teach them life skills, such as responsibility, trust and respect. He would also teach mechanical skills that were really at the core of his being. I was fortunate to receive this education from him.
While working at Ernie’s Bug Shop, I first had the title of “Grounds Maintenance”. Over time I added “Take this old part to the scrap metal pile” to my skill set. I still vividly remember the first time Ernie sent me to the wrecking yard with a 10mm wrench, saying “Go get the coil from the Yellow VW Type-3 with the red fender in the back corner”. First, I had to figure out what a Type-3 was, but armed with a couple of clues, I got that worked out. Then the next thing was, the coil. I had no idea which end of the car I would find the coil on, but my next clue was the 10mm wrench. I found a part that seemed to be what he wanted, and the wrench seemed to fit. In no time flat, the ignition coil was free, and I had a great feeling of accomplishment.
You could say, he’d always help you along, but you would need to figure out things yourself.
Another skill I was able to learn was how to drive a manual transmission. Ernie again, true to form gave me some pointers, but it was my skill to learn. It didn’t go as well as I had hoped. He could see that I was struggling with the task. He brought me into the shop and assembled the pieces of a clutch on the floor. He patiently showed me how the components worked with one another. I went back to the car and successfully drove a manual transmission with the knowledge imparted.
The sharing of his knowledge never stopped.
In the last few years, I asked Ernie if he would help me build an engine for my VW Beetle. He agreed and was excited by the idea. We worked together on the project, sharing information and ideas. It was an exciting time for both of us, in which we had nearly daily calls to update each other with the progress. Once the engine build was complete and successful, I said to Ernie that it was a lot of fun, and I thanked him. He said he had a lot of fun as well. What he said next will always stick with me. He said, “you made some decisions on your own, choices that I wouldn’t have made, but they really worked out. Good work.” This from a man that had built the reputation of being the King of Volkswagens.
Last summer, we went for a cruise in my bug, with the engine that has a little “Weird Science” inside. I won’t forget that day.
I’m going to miss hanging around with him and getting my hands dirty, and just having fun out in the shop.
Mrs. A, Ernie, Cathy, Laurie and your families, deepest condolences from us.

We were sorry to hear of Ernie’s passing and wish to send our condolences to Judith and the family. He was certainly one very unique individual. We first met Ernie when he and Judith bought their property from my father in law and a few years later we would become neighbors. Ernie’s true passions in life were Judith and his Volkswagen’s . He had his own little paradise at the end of the road where he could tear around his personal racetrack or play a few holes of golf or just enjoy the view with nobody bothering him — unless we got snowed in — then he would be canvassing the neighbors for cigarettes. Upon hearing of Ernie's passing I have been at a loss for words. Ernie was a friend and fellow VW nut, his home was also in one
of my favourite places the Bruce. I first met Ernie at I think it was at Bug Out 3, and maintained ties with him ever since.
It was always a nice drive to come up and visit him. Over the years I have bought cars and parts from him and also learned things
from him. I spoke to Ernie on the phone only about three weeks ago. My heart felt condolences to Judith and the rest of Ernie's
family, he will be missed.

If you owned an old Volkswagen in Ontario( and elsewhere ) , or lived near Wiarton, chances are you knew Ernie Abel.
His knowledge and passion for the brand, specifically the older, vintage stuff bordered on, well, actually surpassed fanatical.
I was born and raised in the VW family, but his knowledge base far out-weighed what knowledge I have accumulated over the years.
He was an absolute encyclopedia of information that I, and many others were able to draw from over the years. As some would say: What he didn't know about Volkswagens, wasn't worth knowing...
When I was 17 years old, he helped me with my first attempt at building a dune buggy, which led to countless projects, racing, racing cars, etc, over the years together.
Off-road racing on Ernie & Judith's property, summer and winter. Ice racing on Isaac Lake. Racing Beetles at Mosport, playing giant killer with great success.
I can't imagine how many late nights I spent at Ernie's Bug Shop building another race engine, me building it, Ernie sitting on his stool, smoking, and bitching at me for doing everything wrong. But I respected his input, and in time I think he respected mine.
A strong friendship that has lasted 43 years.
When my father passed away I was lucky enough to have two great father figures from which to draw advice, my father-in-law, and Ernie.
If you were a true friend of Ernie's you could take solace in that fact that he had your back... he was in your corner, no matter what. Period.
As time marches on, life changes, people, and people's interests change, we didn't talk as often as we once did, we would chat once a month or so instead of 4-5 times a day, but I knew that if I needed him in any way, shape , or form, he was there. No questions asked.
That is a true friend.
Now anybody that knew Ernie also knew that he was, to put it nicely:
eccentric- to say the least
foul mouthed- extremely
cantankerous- most days
hot headed- ask Jim Holtom
despised stupidity- always
loved his family
loved and adored his wife, Judith
And I have the honour and privilege of calling Ernie Abel.... my best friend.
To Judith, Catherine, Ernie jr, Laurie, and families....my deepest condolences and love to you all.
To Ernie: The last few years have not been kind to you, Rest In Peace, brother. You fucking- well deserve it.

Ernie was all about the "Under Dog" taking on the "BIG DOG" and the American Muscle cars and high end European with a little 4 cylinder air cooled engine. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to feel this on my own with his "Herbie" and take him for test and tune days at TMP in Cayuga. Wondering why the little car was so fast and the feeling of telling all the Porsche and muscle car owners "Its just a VW engine" was such a thrill. That feeling was accomplished only by the "Weird Science" of Ern's Bug Shop.

My wife Norma and I first met Ernie and Judith at the Keady flea market about 13 yrs ago. Vending was in Ernies blood. You could always tell when Ernie was coming because of his infectuous laugh. He always bought something from us whether he needed it or not. He believed in supporting us vendors. Of course we had to put up with his spiel "Do you have change for a thousand dollar bill" Towards the last couple of years as his health was declining , Jucdith was a pillar of strength. Their love never wavered. I bet Ernie is driving a souped up Volkswagon in that big flea Market in the asky and St. Peter has change for a thousand dollar bill.

Ernie was always Abel to make me laugh with his bark bigger than his bite attitude. I remember our first real interaction getting Ernie to pay a vendors permit at Jitterbug. Demanding seniors discount and I had a ball pestering him all day we exchanged phone numbers and made contact many times and I visited the Wiarton palace a few times and had great visits listening to his amazing colourful stories. Rest in Peace Ernie. To Judith and the whole family be well sorry to hear of Erns passing.

Martha and I extend our heartfelt condolences to Judith and Family, on the passing of our dear friend, mentor and brother Ernie. How will life be the same? As they say, they broke the mould after they cast Ernie. From the telephone conversations to the visits in Wiarton, all the events we were able to share. Judith is strong and will embrace this next chapter in her life. She will receive the support she needs from her close Family and the multitudinous friends they made over the many years of marriage.
The Don of Volkswagendom in Ontario has passed. Any one could call and ask for advice, which they received freely and in abundance. Ernie was a phone person, a person person. Forget the email and social media and all the modern digital flooey, just call. We can always agree to disagree.
Rest in peace Ernie. I see you now, careening over the sand dunes of the Baja, in a dune buggy of your own construction. The Chev sitting at Seasons is still ready and able to hit the road for Vegas and the one-armed bandits.
Rest in Peace my friend.

Judith, please know that you are in our thoughts and in our hearts. It was a huge shock when you told us about Ernie's passing. He is truly a diamond, a man of many facets. Compassionate and opinionated, knowledgeable and Ernie, where did you get THAT IDEA. I could go on and on but like a gem, that's what gave him sparkle. His leaving will leave a huge hole and I feel sorry for those who have never met or been entertained by him. Personally l will miss our evening phone conversations. Over the years they have become a regular part of our lives. RIP Ernesto, my brother, your friends Rob and Nancy

To the Abel family - I am sorry for your loss. Ernie was larger than life..and he played a huge role in my life. In 1978, Ernie sold me my first car. It cost me $430. He told me it would either go 10 feet or 10,000 miles. "What do you expect for $430 dollars"! It went well over 10,000 miles before I sold it. It took Laurie and I to Michigan and back when we were in high school. My second Beetle was born from the pile of cars in the field behind the shop. Blue trunk lid, yellow door, red hood, different vendors. All painted up nice. Cost a whopping $1100. I took it to University. When I turned 40 Ernie hooked me up again. When I turned 50, he suggested I try "a pregnant roller skate" for fun. Hence the Manx in my garage today. The funny thing is I am not remotely mechanically inclined....yet a 59 year old dune buggy is in my garage. Thanks Ern!!

It is with great sadness to hear of the passing of my dear friend. The "King" but also the "Voice" of VW in Ontario. When Ernie was at an event it wasn't hard to find him. His distinct voice would travel more ways than one and you could always pull him out of a crowd by the motorized mobility device he had for the day. It was a staple. Ernie was such a wealth of knowledge and would always take time to lend an ear to anyone's VW problem. He helped many people succeed in racing and business. He was Mr. "Weird Science" and could never leave anything in original format. It always had to be modified. My friend it has been a huge pleasure to spend so many years listening to you rant about everything. We had so many laughs together. So I am doing this for you, In your own true style, I will tell them that "For Christ sake folks!! they better get the spelling of "Volkswagen" not "VolkswagOn" in your Obituary spelt right, or I'm not paying the bill!!. RIP Ernie, your friend John Spironello.
