Obituary of Ernest Reginald Abel
ABEL, Ernest Reginald peacefully in his sleep at his residence at Seasons in Owen Sound on Wednesday, March 31, 2021. Ernest Abel of Owen Sound and formerly of Isaac Lake in his 81st year. Beloved husband of Judith Abel (nee Yeo). Cherished father of Catherine and her husband Fraser Aylsworth of Stratford, Ernie and his wife Sherri of Parkhead and Laurie and her husband Clay Elmquist of Victoria, B.C. Much loved grandfather of Christopher (Haley), Derek, Kylie (Scott) and Brandon. Dear brother of Joyce Laxton (Douglas) of Stoney Creek and Patricia Gaskell (Bert) of Hamilton. Missed by nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents Irene (Tansley) and Harry Abel.
Ernie will be remembered as the King of Volkswagens of Southern Ontario by his many enthusiasts. Together Ernie and Judith founded Bug Out, an event that drew Volkswagen enthusiasts from far and wide. They have been members of the K-W Area Bug Club for 40 years, swapping stories and car parts and building life-long friendships.
Ernest was passionate about his Garage-Mahal, the site of many poker games with family and neighbours, and where many engines were rebuilt. He was happiest when he got everyone involved in a project and there was always plenty to do. He was also an avid reader and a true conservationist.
A good friend to Rob, Mike, Mark and Paul with whom he shared a love of cars and life's adventures on the Bruce Peninsula. Life-long friends to Dave and Anna, Liz and John and Tony and Vicky who never let distance get in the way of celebratory dinners and travels.
