We will miss John very much. Both Chris and I, as well as our children, enjoyed John's visits and lively dinner conversations. John made Elena a classical guitar, an incredible gift that nurtured her love of music and song writing.
We will miss John's spirit, wit, intelligence and constant desire for positive change in our world. He was always a generous and thoughtful friend.
Thinking of John, Ruth, and all of John's family as you remember him today. In John's correspondences, he never failed to mention how everyone was doing and to speak about your accomplishments.
Our thoughts are with all of you.

We hadn’t known John B was ill. He didn’t mention anything in his Christmas letter so it was a shock to hear he is gone. He was a special person in my life, fun to work with and a dear friend. His commitment to social justice, like your own, has inspired many.

From John Merritt:
« Derek Rasmussen informed of John's impending death early on Monday morning. I was able to talk with him, and exchange goodbyes, the same day in a very bittersweet, but most memorable and precious call. I knew he had little time left but now realize, of course, he died later the same day.
A sad loss --- the world's a poorer place.

Sincere condolences from the family connection in Waikanae, New Zealand to Ruth, Katie, Steve, Eleanor and all the immediate family on John's passing.
We have magnificent memories of John and Ruth coming to NZ and the pleasure it gave us to show them our part of the world. John was so keen to witness and learn how our native Maori culture blended with our European heritage. He was fascinated to see it first hand and compare it to his vast knowledge and work experience in Canada. Graeme had a memorable trip to Ontario in 2017 and was treated so marvelously in Tobermory. The beers, scotch and searching discussions were well and truly to the fore. A particular memory was the road trip John took me on with Eleanor to Ottawa. He was so enthusiastic in informing about Parliament, the statues, the history, the culture. We will never forget John. He made such lasting impressions.
A truly remarkable man.

Hi Ruth and everyone,
I just want to give you my love and best wishes at this time.
John, being my elder brother was part of my life from as far back as I can remember. In the years before he left England for Canada, up to when I was 18, he was a fantastic companion, sharing all his experiences with me, making me laugh, encouraging me to read. He was a formative influence in my education. It was a debt I could never repay. I was very proud, among my peers, that he was my brother, daring and independent, and that pride is still with me. It was a real gift to be able to stay in contact with him all these years and keep abreast of what can only be described as an epic life story. He provided me and my family with a unique view of his adopted country of which he was immensely proud.
I was lucky enough to be able to visit him with you earlier in June. It was very sad to see his body being overtaken by cancer but his mind was still as sharp as ever and we still managed to have some great conversations.
I have been really inspired by the way in which he decided to leave, accepting death as something natural and not to be feared. I hope I can be as strong when my turn comes.

Dear Ruth,
Mike and I send our kindest condolences to you, Katie and Stewart. It is a sudden and very sad loss to us and for you and the rest of your family it is that and much more. I have been a witness to John's life since 1970, when you two married. I found myself smiling as I read the obit it because it all rang so true. Thank you. I have participated in and enjoyed many of those discussions with John. The attached photo will remain a picture in my mind, as he steps forward to greet me and offer me a beer. He was an excellent host and made the best curie I ever had. You will miss him dearly. We are so sorry for your loss.
